Design work

I believe that communication is the essence of good graphic design and good illustration.

I value a clear, concise, unequivocal message above any other design element. Clever concepts, beautiful techniques, and thoughtful color choices assist in that communication.

My specialties are books, technical reports, magazines, journals, newsletters -- projects where tight organization aids clear communication. A few representative project titles are:

  • Autism Spectrum Quarterly (±60-page magazine/journal)
  • Chance Murphy and the Battle of Morganville (paperback novel)
  • Jasmine Sugar (paperback book, grief counseling)
  • Revolution in Understanding (paperback non-fiction)
  • Real Strength, Real Muscle (paperback non-fiction, ±400 pages, 250 images)
  • Sankofa (paperback autobiography)
  • The Sun Rising (hardcover novel)
  • Sword in the Boardroom (paperback non-fiction)
  • Super Silly Sayings that are Over Your Head: A Children's Book of Idioms (hardcover children's book, finalist for Benjamin Franklin Award 2005)
  • Surface Ice Rescue (a guidebook to cold-water rescue for fire personnel)
  • Truck Company Operations (guidebook for Fire Department operations, 372 pages, approx. 120 illustrations, and approx. 150 images)
  • How Does Your IEP Measure Up? (book for educators on writing effective Individual Education Plans for children with Autism/Asperger's Syndrome)
  • Cystic Fibrosis -- Understanding the Human Genome Project (supplemental text for schools)
  • The Mattabesset River: An eight year summary report (data from water and macroinvertebrate collections with interpretations, including graphs)
  • The Plan for the Mattabesset River (environmental remediation plan from / for a coalition of river towns and cities)
  • The District Report (Lyme/Old Lyme Board of Education bimonthly newsletter, explaining and "selling" facilities improvements and budget)

And educational science games and products, where, again, the goal is clear communication of concepts. Some project titles are:

  • Scaled Earth -- 22-foot silk-screened banner to scale (1 mm = 1 km) showing core of earth to atmosphere
  • Scaled Solar System -- 14-foot banner with all planets and many satellites, showing orbital ranges and positions to scale, with blow up portraits
  • Electron Hotel -- "Chutes and Ladders" type board game about chemistry, from a game concept developed by science teacher
  • Mo-No-P-O-Li -- chemistry board game, from a game concept developed by science teacher
  • Fold-Up Geology Models -- color-cut-and-fold geological formation cutaways -- volcano, mountain, etc., from concepts developed by science teacher
